A girl and her rice seeds in Sri Lanka (with an ox)

Book: When the Rain Comes by Alma Fullerton

Ages: 4+

Relationship to country: This book takes place in a village in Sri Lanka

Book in a nutshell: A girl tries to save her family's rice seeds in a rainstorm

For Sri Lanka, we read the book When the Rain Comes by Alma Fullerton and illustrated by Kim La Fave. The main character, Malini, is going to learn how to plant the rice seeds for her family for the first time. She is nervous and excited. Planting the rice seeds is very important to her family. All of a sudden, a rain storm comes, and she is stuck with a giant ox and a cart full of seeds. She is worried the ox will crush her or that she will lose the seeds. She is very brave.

I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book. I noticed that there are leaves blowing across the page on almost every page. I think it shows you how big and strong the rainstorm is. I read this book with my little sister, and I think this book would be good for kids ages 4+. Overall I enjoyed this book!
